Public speaking was never my forte. Even imagining myself in front of a room full of audience gives me anxiety. But i know i have to get over it one way or another. All those programs i've joined, papers i presented, self-help books i've read, i still get nervous every time. maybe i've lived my life being an introvert for a little too long, the idea of being starred at by a group of people while i speak seem slightly uncomfortable.. I have no problem conversing one on one though. sometimes when i get too comfortable i end up saying the most random things or ask questions you never saw coming. haha.
Being a researcher is never about doing things alone but everything must be thoroughly discussed with the group members. Your work is nothing if it isn't shared and presented for other people to benefit from. after years and numerous presentations, this should be a piece of cake for me but no, until now i'll spend hours prior memorizing scripts and my presentations will always seem rehearsed and unnatural :( i envy those who can emcee ceremonies or give impromptu speeches like they were born to be public speakers.
As cliche as this may sound, greatness doesn't come from comfort zones. You can't achieve anything if you're stuck in your hiding place only eyeing what you want from afar. I guess every great speaker was once a shy timid individual at some point in their life. The only difference is that they've managed to overcome their fears and try things out of their norm. If you are like me, i recommend watching TED talks on youtube or TED.com to learn a thing or two on stage presenting. Watching their videos can be inspiring and the topics are also engaging. Worth a try and i assure you'll be hooked (sudden promo?) :3

Footnote:
Since the new semester is starting in a couple of weeks, i'm planning to give myself another shot at being an outgoing socializer, if possible :p. Perhaps an awkward social butterfly. its not going to be easy, as i shy away from people's attention most of the time but now is a good time as any. no harm in befriending everyone, right?
